Four years of auditions, zero roles. Then one homemade tape changed everything. The true story of Cailee Spaeny’s rise to a Venice best actress win.
Cailee Spaeny: The Homemade Audition That Launched a Star
Cailee Spaeny was born on July 24, 1998, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the seventh of nine children. She grew up in Springfield, Missouri, where she left school at 13 to focus on acting.
She trained at Springfield Little Theatre up to six days a week, taking dance, voice and acting classes. In the 2014–2015 season, she played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz there.
Four Years of Hearing No
In 2012, at 14, she convinced her parents to drive her to Los Angeles. The family kept making the trip, summer after summer, staying with people they knew.
Money was tight. Spaeny later said her mom privately worried they couldn’t afford it but never told her, and prayed each night for a break.
For about four years, she auditioned and booked nothing.

The Tape That Changed Everything
Then came the chance to audition for Pacific Rim: Uprising, the sequel to the 2013 blockbuster. She filmed it at home in Springfield, about 1,600 miles from the casting directors.
She rubbed dirt on her face. The house had no air conditioning, so the sweat was real. Remote controls stood in for robot controls, and her acting coach filmed on a phone as Spaeny threw herself to the floor.
She got the part. On September 15, 2016, trade outlets announced the newcomer, then 18, as the film’s female lead opposite John Boyega.
Filming began in Sydney, Australia. Her very first scene was an action sequence on Cockatoo Island. After that shoot, she booked four more movies in a single week.
In 2018 alone, she appeared in four films: Pacific Rim: Uprising, Bad Times at the El Royale, On the Basis of Sex and Vice.
The Role She Never Auditioned For
In 2022, director Sofia Coppola cast her as Priscilla Presley without an audition, after their mutual friend Kirsten Dunst vouched for her. Coppola shot the film out of order in just 30 days. Some days, Spaeny played a pregnant adult Priscilla in the morning and a 14-year-old after lunch.
Here is the detail most people miss. Priscilla met Elvis in 1959, at 14. Spaeny began her own journey in 2012, also at 14. She even grew up visiting Graceland on family vacations.
In September 2023, at the 80th Venice Film Festival, Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress. Priscilla Presley watched the premiere beside her. At the afterparty, Presley told her she had watched her own life through Spaeny’s performance.
A Golden Globe nomination followed. In 2024 came Civil War and Alien: Romulus, which earned more than $350 million worldwide. In 2025 she joined Daniel Craig in Wake Up Dead Man. In 2026 she starred in and executive produced season two of Beef, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination as a producer. She is also cast in Elden Ring, set for March 2028.
The girl who heard no for four years simply refused to stop.
