The Adopted Son and the $245,573 Bet

Jeff Bezos was raised by a Cuban refugee who adopted him at 4. His parents bet their savings on Amazon. The true story.

A Teenage Mother and a Missing Father

Jeff Bezos was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His mother, Jackie, had turned 17 just two weeks earlier. His birth father, Ted Jorgensen, was a 19-year-old unicycle performer. The marriage didn’t last, and Jackie filed for divorce in June 1965.

The Refugee Who Became His Dad

On July 21, 1962, a 16-year-old named Miguel “Mike” Bezos arrived in Miami from Cuba through Operation Pedro Pan, a program that brought unaccompanied Cuban children to the U.S. He came alone, spoke no English, and carried one small suitcase with three shirts, three pairs of pants and one pair of shoes.

He earned scholarships, studied math at the University of Albuquerque, and met Jackie. They married, and he adopted her son. At 4, Jeff took the Bezos name.

The Garage

Jeff graduated from Princeton in 1986. By 1994, he was a senior vice president at D. E. Shaw, a Wall Street hedge fund. Then he quit. On July 5, 1994, he founded the online bookstore that became Amazon, working out of a rented garage in Bellevue, Washington.

In 1995, his parents invested $245,573, much of it retirement savings. He warned them there was about a 70% chance they would lose it. They invested anyway.

Amazon grew into one of the largest companies on Earth. On July 5, 2021, exactly 27 years after he founded it, he stepped down as CEO. Fifteen days later, on July 20, 2021, he flew to space aboard his own Blue Origin rocket.

The Father Who Didn’t Know

Here’s the surprising part. For nearly five decades, Ted Jorgensen had no idea what had become of his son. He had even forgotten the boy’s new last name. In 2012, journalist Brad Stone tracked him down at his bike shop in Arizona while researching a book on Amazon. That’s how Jorgensen learned his son was Jeff Bezos.

There is no public record that father and son ever met. Jorgensen died on March 16, 2015, at 70.

A New Chapter

In November 2025, Bezos took on his first formal operating role since leaving Amazon, as co-CEO of an AI startup called Project Prometheus, launched with $6.2 billion in funding.

His story is a reminder that family isn’t only who you’re born to. Sometimes it’s the person who chooses you, and then believes in you when the odds say not to.
