Emma Stone: From Panic Attacks to Two Oscars

At 7, Emma Stone battled panic attacks. At 15, she moved to Hollywood. Today she’s a two-time Oscar winner. Her true story.

A Shy Kid in Arizona

Emma Stone was born Emily Jean Stone on November 6, 1988, in Scottsdale, Arizona. At 7, right before second grade, she had her first panic attack at a friend’s house. She suddenly believed the house was on fire and that everyone would die. Her mom came to get her.

The attacks lasted about two years. Her parents enrolled her in therapy, which helped. Youth theater helped even more. Improv comedy gave her a way to connect with people and feel less afraid.

Project Hollywood

At 14, she made a PowerPoint presentation called Project Hollywood to persuade her parents to let her try acting in Los Angeles. It worked. In 2004, shortly after her 15th birthday, she and her mother moved to L.A. while her father stayed in Arizona.

The Name She Couldn’t Use

Here’s the surprising part. When she joined the Screen Actors Guild, another performer named Emily Stone was already registered. So she became Emma, because it was close to Emily. Friends still call her Em, and in 2024 she said she’d love to be called Emily again.

The Grind

Her first big break, the role of Laurie Partridge in a reboot of The Partridge Family, ended when the pilot wasn’t picked up. Work was scattered, and she took a job at a dog-biscuit bakery.

In 2007, at 19, she played Jonah Hill’s love interest in Superbad. Afterward, at producer Judd Apatow’s suggestion, she dyed her naturally blond hair red. In 2010, Easy A made her a leading lady and earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Two Oscars

On February 26, 2017, she won the Oscar for Best Actress for La La Land, playing a struggling actress who refuses to quit. On March 10, 2024, she won her second Best Actress Oscar for Poor Things, which she also produced.

In October 2018, she spoke openly about anxiety. She said that when sensitive people use it for something productive, it can be like a superpower.

Breaking Meryl Streep’s Record

On January 22, 2026, she earned two nominations for Bugonia: Best Actress, and Best Picture as a producer. At 37, she became the youngest woman ever to reach seven Oscar nominations, breaking a record Meryl Streep had held since 1988.

The girl who once had to call her mom to come get her had become one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation.

Her story is a reminder that fear doesn’t have to stop you. Sometimes the very thing that scares you becomes the place where you find your voice.
