Sofía Vergara: From Colombia to Cancer Survivor and Star

Sofía Vergara was a mother at 19 and beat cancer at 28. Then Modern Family made her TV’s top earner. Her true story.

A Beach in Colombia

Sofía Vergara was born on July 10, 1972, in Barranquilla, Colombia, one of six children. A photographer discovered her while she was walking on a beach in Santa Marta. At 17, she appeared in her first commercial, a Pepsi ad that aired across Latin America.

She didn’t plan on fame. She studied dentistry for three years at the National University of Colombia, leaving just two semesters short of finishing.

Young Mother, Hard Losses

In 1990, at 18, she married her high school sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez. Her son Manolo was born on September 16, 1991. The couple divorced in 1993.

Then tragedy struck. Her older brother Rafael was killed in Colombia during an attempted kidnapping. In 1998, partly to escape the violence, she moved to Miami with her son. She worked as a model and hosted shows on Univision.

The Diagnosis

In 2000, at 28, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She had her thyroid removed and went through radioactive iodine treatment. She made a full recovery.

The Role That Changed Everything

In 2009, she was cast as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in ABC’s Modern Family. The show ran for 11 seasons and 250 episodes. She earned four straight Emmy nominations, from 2010 to 2013.

On July 18, 2012, Forbes named her the highest-paid woman in American television, with $19 million earned in a year.

Here’s the surprising part. Sofía is naturally blonde. Early in her career, she was asked to dye her hair darker so she would look more “stereotypically Hispanic” for roles. She also got a perfect score on her U.S. citizenship test.

A Bold Reinvention

At 51, she took on her first major dramatic role. In Netflix’s Griselda, released in January 2024, she played Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. In July 2024, the role earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. She was the first Latin American-born Latina nominated in that category.

Building an Empire

Since 2020, she has been a judge on America’s Got Talent. Two of her Golden Buzzer picks went on to win the show, in 2022 and 2025. In June 2023, she launched her skincare brand, Toty, named after her childhood nickname.

Her story is a reminder that hard beginnings don’t decide where you end up. Sometimes the person who survives the most is the one who keeps saying yes to life.
